About our Products
Our fabric is GOTS certified which is recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers.
Our gorgeously soft jersey is 95% organic cotton and 5% elastine. This 5% elastic content is what helps give our fabric excellent stretch and recovery. It took us a long time to source a supplier that we were happy with as we are very fussy about fabric!
GOTS certified cotton limits the use of toxic bleaches, dyes and other chemical inputs during the production process of textiles. It is internationally recognized as the toughest organic textile standard because it goes far beyond verifying the organic farming process to include every step of manufacturing.
To obtain the GOTS organic label our fabric has to contain at least 95% organic fiber, and not be treated with bleach, formaldehyde or any other toxic substances. It must be colored with nontoxic dyes, and be produced in a mill that enforces strict social and environmental standards, treating their employees and the earth with deep respect.
GOTS certification means that our fabric meets the very highest standards. Our fabric is also certified Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX (Product Class 1) . This means our fabric is tested for harmful substances and is harmless in human ecological terms. OEKO-TEX tests include numerous regulated and non-regulated substances, and in many cases the criteria and limit values go well beyond international requirements. These standards are updated yearly and expanded with new scientific knowledge and statutory requirements. Standard 100 also means the fabric reaches requirements of Annexes XVII and XIV of the REACH Regulation and the ECHA-SVHC candidate list - regulations of the European union adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from harmful chemicals.
Also, being Product class 1 means that our fabric lives up to the OEKO-TEX standard required for babies and children up to 36 months. Thus guaranteeing you that every measure has been taken to protect your little one's health and well being when it comes to Sugar & Storm's clothing.
At Sugar & Storm the quality of our print is of the utmost importance. When we decided to start our adventure into the world of sustainable clothing we knew it would be a challenge to find the fabric and high print quality we desired. We went through a number of suppliers with rigorous testing and found a surprising difference in quality.
Our suppliers use reactive digital printing, a process that provides three main advantages for us - It is eco-friendly, has a high quality of colour production - especially on cotton, and high wash and rub fastness. Reactive printing is an eco-friendly printing process with virtually no excess dye wastage, the inks are water soluble, and also PH neutral or close to it. The use of high quality inks also help to provide darker darks and more vibrant colours - something our suppliers really impressed us with. High wash fastness and rub fastness were huge factors for us. If clothing is to last and their colours remain vibrant, washing often and being able to handle the stormy nature of our little treasures daily life has to be prioritised.
how it's made
When we started Sugar & Storm we had a number of criteria in mind - to create a sustainable, eco-friendly business, create Irish jobs and help change the way we produce, and consume, when it comes to fashion and clothing.
At Sugar & Storm all our fabric designs are 100% exclusive. We work with a wonderful fabric designer called Rebecca who helped us turn our dream into reality. Over many months she helped us capture and create the ideas we felt best represented Sugar & Storm.
All our clothing is hand made in Ireland. We aim to make clothing that lasts, reducing the overall consumption that fast fashion has encouraged and ensuring that the purchases you do make, are special and can be enjoyed long into the future.
Extra care has been taken to provide robust garments that take into account the rough and tumble nature of a child's life and provide not just a sustainable solution for the environment, but for your pocket too.
All our clothing is overlocked to ensure strength and durability of seams so that our clothing lasts. Our wash care label is made from our super soft organic cotton jersey, meaning no scratchy irritating tags. Also, hems and bands are Coverstitched so they are strong and neat. Your children's clothing will maintain its shape and strength while your little one does what they do best - channel their inner Sugar & Storm!
Packaging is important. We need to ensure your parcel gets to you safe, undamaged and provides a good experience overall. At every step we have made sure our packaging is sustainable, eco-friendly, and recyclable, compostable, or both.
Our postcards, business cards and swing tags have been made with recycled card. Our mailers - which are made mainly from corn starch - are home compostable, carbon negative, waterproof, reusable (dual adhesive strip), and use non toxic water based inks. Our stickers and string are also compostable, as is our tissue paper which is made from recycled paper and printed with non toxic PH neutral inks to reduce the impact on the environment.
